New Year’s Resolution to Journal: Step 1, Make a Journal

Hello!  I hope everyone is coming off of a grand weekend.  Mine was wonderful, though too short, as always.

As I mentioned in my last post, the one thing I really want to do in 2014 is journal my creative life.  In order to do that, I’ll need a journal, right?  So I set off this weekend to make one.

Homemade Journal

My new journal

I’d like to take credit for the idea of using an old children’s book for the cover, but that belongs to Patty of Radish Blossoms whose work I’m inspired by.  I added the frame with the year because the frame literally fell out of the closet at my feet.  I figured it was a sign that it was a time to use it.

I am forever buying old books at thrift stores for their crafting potential so I was ready to go with this project.  Honestly, I could probably make a hundred more of these without shopping for supplies I have so many old books.

Making the pages with my very dusty paper trimmer

The pages are made from the pages of other books cut down to uniform size.  The idea is that you write on a another piece of paper and glue it in along with embellishments.

My first entry

The reason the binding rings are so big is because as you add embellishments, the thickness of the journal will grow.

More pages to fill

Journal Making 5

Even more pages to fill

I love how this turned out! Now I have the journal, I just have to discipline myself to actually make the entries.  This is going to be the hard part for me.

    • Tell me about it! I some times feel like that dog in the movie “Up!” Squirrel! And I’m off in a new direction…

      • Yeah, except in my case it’s “Fabric!”. My resolution (again) is to finish everything I start before I begin the next one because I’ve fallen in love with some new fabric. So far, so good, but I hear the siren song of three new lots of fabric in my cupboard….

  1. Love this so much!! So creative! Have a wonderful and craft week! And, thanks for your sweet comment on my blog! xo Heather

  2. Oh my- I love this- how do you do those rings? I have so many journals all over the place- partially started- I need to gather them all up and then tear the pages out, put them in chronological order and make ONE journal- I think the oldest one was started when I was pregnant with my first kiddo- in 1987!!!!hahahahahaha…and I love NPR, too!
