What’s That You’re Listening To?

What do you listen to when you work?  Do you enjoy the silence accompanied only by the roar of the sewing machine engine, or do you need a little background noise?

I’m going to confess.  Lately, my go to background noise in the sewing room is the Loretta Lynn station on Pandora.  I can’t get me enough of that old country music.  Loretta kicks butt, by the way.  She is one woman who didn’t take crap from anyone.  Bless the Coal Miner’s Daughter!

I also love my Saturday morning NPR double-header of Car Talk and Wait! Wait! Don’t Tell Me!  These two shows crack me up.

When hand sewing, I’ve got Netflix on.  I don’t have cable any more so I am a Netflix junkie.  I recently worked my way through Battlestar Galatica, which was awesome.

I’ve now moved on to Friday Night Lights.  O.M.G.  I LOVE this show!  I’m not a football fan and, but this show about a high school football team is the best.  I’m almost done with all five seasons and I think I might cry when it’s over.

I’m open to suggestions for what to watch next.  My boyfriend is pushing for me to go retro and watch old episodes of Quincy.  Hhhhmmm, I’m all about retro, but I’m not convinced.

I’d love to hear what you like to listen to while you create.

  1. I usually listen to nothing, silence is golden in my house. Although I may be late to the show, I just started watching Dr. Who and I love it!! Of course, I like Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, sci-fi, etc….

    • I like to put on tv shows I’ve watched before – comfort shows like Doctor Who and sitcoms I love and that sort of thing. It’s best if it’s something I’ve already seen, so I don’t get too distracted from what I’m trying to do.

  2. OK, well, if I listen to anything over the roar of the sewing machine and the OTHER roar of the air conditioning unit, it’s something nice and soothing. Currently, that would be Chopin Piano Etudes. Sorry… Classical’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but I find it works for me.

  3. If you’re going retro crime fighters, how about Streets of San Francisco? At least you’ve got hunky (young) Michael Douglas to watch. No offense, of course, to Jack Klugman.

I listened to music all the time throughout 2012, but as I moved through the year (and some … things…) I found I was using it to try to drown out those things. And I found in 2013 I pretty much couldn’t listen to music at all, I needed the silence. Fortunately in the last 3 or 4 months it’s been getting much better and I a normal person again. :) And I have begun actually enjoying music while I work.

  4. I’m all over the place with my listening preferences…but it’s usually U2, The Killers, REM, Zac Brown Band, 80s, Pearl Jam…like I said, all over the place! 8-) As for watching suggestions. I believe the first 4 seasons of Parenthood are available on Netflix. That’s a great show.

  5. I definitely listen to music while sewing. It mostly depends on what stage I’m in for what music. I like mellow singer/songwriters when cutting or doing something I kind of have to think about. When I’m chain piecing I want something upbeat, maybe some 80s classics :) I also Netflix while handsewing. I LOVED Friday Night Lights and Battlestar Galactica! We just finished up Lost, so I’m also looking for my next addiction :)

  6. OOoh Battlestar Galactica was a good one. We’re almost thru Fringe right now and we’ve enjoyed that. And Arrow. Not while I sew though since my sewing room is right next to the kiddos’ room.

Have you seen the Funny or Die Friday Night Nights spoof? It’s so funny.

  7. I love the peace and quiet, so during the winter, my sewing is only usually punctuated by contented purrs and snores from Mr Boy and Mimi Bubba, curled up on my sewing table keeping me company. But over the summer I always fire up my MLB app on my iPad, propped next to my machine, to watch the previous night’s game. We’re 6-8 hours ahead of the US here in Switzerland and so unless it’s a day game, we never get to watch any more. Perfect sewing fodder :-)
